But age affects all of us differently, whether you lose your hair, lose your memory, or lose your excitement at a McDonald’s happy meal. We all get hit by the effects of it at different times, and there are many reasons for this. Genetics is one of them, and we can’t help that, but there are some things we can change.

In this article we’ll look at the secrets to growing old with grace, whilst still maintaining a happy and healthy look long into your old age. Keep reading to find out our 11 secrets to looking younger. So let us count down the list.

1. Protect your skin from the sun.

Okay, yes, this would be the best way to slow down the aging process. But you don’t have to just spend your time inside. You can protect your skin from the sun by looking for shade on a hot day, covering up your skin with protective clothing like hats, lightweight long-sleeved shirts, and sunglasses with ultraviolet protection.

Also, applying sunscreen that is thirty SPF or higher and water-resistant (because you’re going to be sweating on hot days), is the best way to make sure your skin stays protected. You should apply sunscreen every day, especially on your face, as this is affected first. And don’t just do it on hot days.

Ultraviolet rays literally affect our cells, so they can make their way through some clouds. The more careful you are and the more diligent you are, the longer you’ll be able to live without age lines and dangerous sun spots. Also, if you want to be really protected, look out for clothes with an ultraviolet protection factor label, usually labeled as UPF.

2. Eat healthy foods.

The things you put into your body play as big a part in how you look as the things that hit your body from the outside, so maintaining a healthy diet can really combat wrinkles. Anti-ageing foods tend to be superfoods like avocados, quinoa, tomatoes and almonds, or any type of nut really, will not only make you healthier and more energized, they will also help with the overall health and glow of your skin.

Avoiding white sugar which can be found in sweets and drinks like Coke and Mountain Dew and other pre-packaged foods is also a good idea. It leads to an insulin spike which in turn leads to inflammation of your body. Some people may notice spots and blemishes straight after eating those foods, and that is basically the process of aging rearing its ugly head.

3. Stop smoking.

Yes, we’re sorry. As much as we would like to tell you there is something else you can do whilst still enjoying all of your vices, when it comes to smoking, the only way to reduce its effect on your skin is simply to stop.

Whilst all of our other tips will still have a positive impact, tobacco smoke is one of the main factors in a large number of people’s age lines. It also causes a lot of even more serious health risks, such as lung cancer. But hey, if you don’t smoke, that’s one down!

4. Stay hydrated.

Drinking lots of water is key to a healthy and glowing complexion. The recommended amount of water intake per day is half of your body weight in ounces, which sounds like loads but it isn’t really once you get used to it. They say a body in motion stays in motion, and similarly a person that drinks water keeps drinking water.

Figure out what helps you to drink more water during the day. Maybe it’s adding a sugar-free sweetener or flavor to it, or maybe it’s setting an alarm to throw back a glass every hour on the hour. Once you’ve got into the habit, the habit will stay. And your skin will really benefit as a result. Hydration flushes out the toxins from your system and this cleansing will reduce blemishes on your skin, a well as wrinkles.

5. Reduce your alcohol intake.

While our last tip was to put more liquid in your body, this one is to take some out. Alcohol is bad for your skin, as well as your liver and your heart, although it is true that a little bit of red wine is good for the heart. Reducing your intake will play a huge role in slowing down the aging process.

You don’t have to stop completely, just try and limit yourselves to two glasses a day, or three days off a week. Different drinks also play a bigger role in aging. Sugary cocktails are the real killers, so try and stay clear of them. But all alcohol leads to inflammation and dryness of the skin the next day, which leads to wrinkles and blemishes in the long term.

6. Sleep.

That’s right! As if you needed an excuse to spend more time in bed. As if you needed an excuse to spend more time in bed. No one looks good after a restless night, and whilst it is impossible to remove those from your life completely, getting a good night’s sleep as often as possible is vital to the way you look.

Sleeping on your back is best for your face as well, because if you’re on your side or front you rub up against the pillow and sheets and this creates dryness and wrinkles over time. So lie down on your back, put on some nature sounds, and get a good night’s sleep!

7. Moisturize.

This is so important no matter what your age or gender. There are loads of anti-ageing moisturizers and eye-bag reducers and self-tanning moisturizers all over the drugstore. They are all good, but the real key to youthful skin is just to use something.

Moisturizers keep your skin hydrated from the outside in, and prevent dry and flaky skin. All these blemishes lead to wrinkles.

8. Take your makeup off.

Don’t worry, you can still wear makeup and look your most fabulous. Just be sure to take it off before you go to bed. Sleeping in your makeup is really terrible for your skin in the short and long term, as it does not allow your pores the chance to breathe.

If you forget to take your makeup off this will block your pores and also lock in any bacteria and minerals you have picked up during the day. Be sure to wash it off before bed, and then complete the tip before this and moisturize once your face is makeup free.

9. Take vitamin E.

Vitamins vitamins vitamins! Antioxidants are a natural entity that prevent our cells from dying. Visually, aging is basically just dying skin cells, so finding ways to combat that is key to looking your healthiest and youngest. Vitamin E is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, so this is a great vitamin to look for in your foods or supplements in order to fight the aging process.

It protects against cell damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays, especially combined with vitamin C, reduces swelling of the skin and any inflammatory skin conditions, and also has its own moisturizing properties! It’s also not created inside the body, so literally has to be taken from outside sources.

Foods like almonds, asparagus and spinach are all high in this vitamin, as well as vegetable oil and sweet potatoes. If you’re not a fan of any of these vegetables then don’t be disappointed, you can easily buy vitamin E supplements from over the counter which will do the job just the same. Whilst on the topic of vitamins, it’s important to note that the sun provides the all-important vitamin, vitamin D.

So even though the sun does speed up the aging process, it is packed with nutrients that are important for your body and mind in other ways. You’re far better off counteracting the sun’s negative effect with vitamin E and protecting yourself with sunscreen than you are avoiding the sun altogether.

10. Take collagen.

Collagen is a major building block for healthy skin. It makes it tighter, plumper, more elastic, more full of moisture, and generally promotes good skin tone. More than anything, because it’s a protein, it helps to repair aging or damaged skin. We have collagen naturally in our bodies already: it makes up about 80% of the middle layer of the skin.

As we age though, or as we do things we shouldn’t be like smoking, drinking or staring directly at the sun, it starts to decrease. Don’t worry though! You can buy collagen supplements at drugstores and even supermarkets, and they have lots of other benefits too outside of skin health. They’re also mostly flavorless and easy to dissolve in water or smoothies.

11. Take vitamin C.

As mentioned earlier, when combined with vitamin E, vitamin C is one of the most effective beauty and antioxidant supplements. It increases collagen synthesis, reduces lines that are brought on by stresses and sun exposure, and reduces melanin formation. It may even have a brightening effect on the skin.

The biggest source of vitamin C in foods is citrus, so make sure you drink your orange juice! If citrus gives you eczema or anything like that as is common in some people, you can also find it in strawberries, tomatoes, white potatoes and bell peppers.

Of course, there are loads of other things you can do to help slow down the process of aging. Many of them are expensive though, so these are just 11 cheap and easy tips to keep your skin looking younger and fresher. Got any more anti-ageing secrets?
